I have a sensory processing disorder child who is using the potty as a comfort for her anxiety / frustration for the being of her day before school everyday for the last week. What can I do / what kind of empathy do I show her or what should I not do? JO Anxiety and frustration have a root cause? Comment on Who Has a Disorder? by Karen DeBolt http://funandfunction.com/blogit/2008/07/09/who-has-a-disorder/#comment-123 Karen DeBolt Fri, 08 Aug 2008 22:53:17 +0000 http://funandfunction.com/blogit/2008/07/09/who-has-a-disorder/#comment-123 I SO agree! While there are teachers in this world who totally get this and are able to help kids who don't fit into the mold, others need some more help in understanding. In the meantime, helping our kids to find what they are good at and letting them do those things so that they don't get too beaten down is so very important. I SO agree! Comment on Constipation and Sensory Processing Disorder by Connie Hunter http://funandfunction.com/blogit/2008/01/05/constipation-and-sensory-processing-disorder/#comment-77 Connie Hunter Tue, 03 Jun 2008 16:40:46 +0000 http://funandfunction.com/blogit/2008/01/05/constipation-and-sensory-processing-disorder/#comment-77 Regarding constipation and children with sensory processing disorders: Some children's constipation can be relieved over time by following a gluten and casein free diet, or the Feingold diet, which removes food additives. When a child presents with constipation in addition to sensory processing issues, it may be wise to suggest parents do some research on issues of constipation and dietary interventions. Parents can then discuss their findings with their pediatricians with a more informed approach. Often, many of the sensory processing issues begin to improve somewhat once changes in the child's food diet are made. Regarding constipation and children with sensory processing disorders:

Comment on The Dignity Of Risk by Michael O'Grady http://funandfunction.com/blogit/2008/04/24/the-dignity-of-risk/#comment-76 Michael O'Grady Mon, 02 Jun 2008 01:51:27 +0000 http://funandfunction.com/blogit/2008/04/24/the-dignity-of-risk/#comment-76 This is the story of my life. I couldn't agree more that "prudent risks" are the most important. As a PT, a parent, and a survivor of a traumatic brain injury 30 years ago, I often reflect fondly upon those individuals and groups that gave me the self-confidence to pursue my dreams, but also created a structure in which I could succeed. They created the basis for allowing me to become a mature individual. Too many kids whom I treat do not have the same familial and social benefits that I have had. While I was challenged in a loving manner, they are treated like china dolls without a chance to overcome because there are never any obstacles put in their way. Their parents/ caregivers take care of everything. I see this and I weep inside because I know that while the parents mean well, they are creating dependent adults who will never know the joy of failure... and then sucess. The experiences of these children will never teach them to do better because whatever they do is good enough. As parents and PTs, our job is to work together to create a situation in which it is OK to have difficulty, but in which it is better to keep trying and moving closer to success. All learning is accomplished in this way - from infant to Einstein. This is the story of my life. I couldn’t agree more that “prudent risks” are the most important. So even though you suggest, I get really upset when I see all your toys on the floor this can be what the child wants, as in, to get a reaction for their behaviour. So keeping the emotions out of it when you tell them this is important too. Best wishes!! Guy Good list! its also important to not get emotional when reprimanding. Comment on Thinking Fresh by Leanne Grace http://funandfunction.com/blogit/2008/05/01/thinking-fresh/#comment-66 Leanne Grace Mon, 05 May 2008 23:22:54 +0000 http://funandfunction.com/blogit/2008/05/01/thinking-fresh/#comment-66 The pressures of being a parent are compounded by the messages from the media to buy this, that and the other thing to increase your child's school success! The reality of play to provide children with all the tools they need for school readiness doesn't even seem possible for families. Yet play provides children the opportunity to practice social competency, use their imagination, creativity and problem solving, learn empathy, persistance and pro-social behaviors. In helping families to think about this issue, I've given them a brown paper lunch bag and asked them to "pack their child's lunch bag of life", they are to write on the bag what they would give their child in order to succeed in life. Interestingly, they NEVER write to know their letters, colors and numbers...but instead list those life skills of health, happiness, friends, creativity, problem solving....Sometimes those of us who work in early childhood need to provide opportunities for families of young children to take some time and examine their values and find ways to support them. Commercialization of children is a tough battle to win!!!!!!!!! "No Child Left Behind" has put indescribable pressure on school principals, administrators, and teachers to produce a more intense curriculum at an earlier age. As a result many more students are falling behind. Children are being required to write before they developmentally have the skills necessary to do so. Once again, thanks for a very insightful and thought provoking blog! Congrats on your baby and thanks for keeping these blogs coming! Many parents want desperately to envelope their children in a protective bubble and then wonder why their children don't have the coping skills needed when faced with life's touch issues in the future. Families can simply begin by allowing children to experience those real "bumps and bruises" along the way....losing games, daily separations, not being invited to birthday parties, not getting candy in the grocery store line, hurtful words from "friends"...all of these provide opportunties to learn life skills little by little. Significant adults in childrens lives can scaffold their learning by talking through issues and problem solving, what can you do next time, what would you say to that friend, how did that feel and what can you do about your feelings, role playing situations together. Children need these messages from important adults in their lives...I love you, I know you can handle it and it may be hard, but you CAN do it.
