About Fun and Function

Meet the Founder, Aviva Weiss, MS, OTR/L

With the rising number of children with special needs, Fun and Function is reinventing the category of toys, games and therapy products with playful features, cool styling and affordable pricing.
Normalizing “Special Needs”
Launched in 2005 by pediatric occupational therapist, Aviva Weiss and her husband, Haskel, Fun and Function LLC has been lauded for “normalizing” the experience of being different, and helping children achieve their fullest potential. Weiss was inspired to start her own company when she discovered that one of her children had sensory processing disorder. She was frustrated by the lack of kid-friendly products, inconsistent quality, and high pricing.
Products Enable All Children to Play Together
Today, pediatric therapists and parents value the innovative products from Fun and Function that build skills and self-esteem in children on the autism spectrum, with sensory processing disorders, speech/developmental delays, and other challenges. Daycare administrators, schools, and hospitals praise the craftsmanship and versatility of the products which foster inclusion, enabling children of all abilities to navigate their differences through play.
For example, the award-winning Magical Apparel engages children in the world of fantasy play and has a varitey of closures to practice dressing and strengthen fine motor skills. Interior pockets hold optional weights to help calm and focus children who need extra sensory input. Featured in Parenting Magazine and WNBC TV, Magical Apparel has been recognized as one of the ten best creative products by Dr. Toy, and was honored by the iParenting Media Award.
Other exclusive products include high-density foam scooters to strengthen motor skills and help all children exercise for longer periods of time:  magnetic games to develop language and expressive skills; portable writing and drawing kits ; weighted fleece vests, caps, blankets, and more.
Deepening the channels
The business community has also responded with interest, from coverage in the Philadelphia Business Journal to studies by teams at the Wharton School. The demographic spike in special needs – estimated at 13% of US children under age 18 – has increased interest and distribution by vast online stores like Amazon.com as well as specialty channels like Becker’s School Supplies.
Expanding with fashion
This spring, Fun and Function launched a new interactive site, ByKidsOnly.com,
where children design and vote on their ideal clothing. Winning
designs are produced in organic cotton, without seams or
tags, addressing the clothing sensitivities of special
needs as well as the fashion flair of many children.
