Sensory Seeking Toys

Sensory tools can help kids, teens and adults manage sensory input. For sensory seeking kids and teens, jumping on a trampoline provides proprioceptive input. The rhythmic bouncing can be calming and organizing, especially before or after school or during a therapy session. Sensory seeking kids can benefit from using a sensory gym during the school day. Opportunities for active climbing, rocking, spinning and swinging tools can support sensory integration and boost focus. Kids love zipping around and bouncing, so activities featuring scooters and therapy balls can also be part of a sensory gym program. When kids return to class, they are ready to learn. Once back in class, a rocker board or chair fidget keeps feet busy so that kids can maintain calm. Fidgets can also be placed discreetly inside a desk or clipped on to a belt loop to keep fidgety fingers engaged. Completing seatwork can be challenging for kids with sensory processing disorder, but active seating, such as a wobble chair or inflated cushion, can help kids engage core muscles and get sensory input while they work. For kids who are over stimulated, proprioceptive feedback from a weighted lap pad or weighted clothing can boost calm during circle time or lunchtime. Weighted blankets can also help during a sensory break or when resting at home. A weighted animal friend is the perfect companion when traveling. A sensory room can offer an immersive calming experience. Kids and teens with sensory processing disorder can use the interactive technology to create a sensory experience that's just right for them. In therapy sessions or at playtime, kids with sensory needs love to crawl through a resistance tunnel or wrap themselves in a stretchy cape or space explorer for calming heavy work. Kids may experience sensory overload at the movies, in a busy store or while traveling, and chewies can be helpful in those settings. Chewing can be calming as it helps kids filter incoming sensory information. Kids enjoy wearing chewelry so that they always have a chewy on hand, and many kids use their chewies as fidgets too.
