Two in One

A Space for Every Child

Chris Johnson, the curriculum and grant director at the Aransas Pass independent school district, wanted a large hybrid sensory room. This hybrid room encourages both active motion and calming activities, allowing children with varied needs to use the tools that work for them.

Meeting Different Needs in One Action Room

Two schools in Isle of Wight County, Virginia dreamed of building sensory rooms to support their students’ needs. With grants from the Special Education Department, Lisa Phipps reached out to Fun and Function to begin working on the project. Each sensory room was designed as an action room, planned specifically to promote active movement, coordination and self-regulation.

To create a hybrid room, the room was divided into two separate areas– one for action and the other for calming. Each area had the appropriate tools installed, so that children could find the input and stimulation they crave. From weighted blankets and cozy seating options to various visual and auditory stimulators, such as the Musical Touch Wall and the Sensory Color Column, there is something for everyone. Some of the tools added teach cause and effect through interactive play, improving the children’s cognitive and motor planning skills.

Chris received a full day of online training with our team, so that he and his team would know how to use the sensory room most effectively. The sensory room was such a success that he soon ordered additional equipment to take the sensory room to the next level!
