Heaven on Earth
A sensory space for kids and teens with autism
Start My Sensory SpaceStart My Sensory Space
The Background
At Holy Angels Autism Center, in Shreveport, LA, the staff is committed to helping each person with autism reach their potential. As part of their multidisciplinary approach, they wanted a sensory space that could support therapeutic goals. With a budget of $18,000, they were excited to see how Fun and Function’s sensory equipment could benefit their clientele.
The Vision
To create a therapeutic sensory space that supports people with autism.
The Challenge
Fun and Function’s Action Room model had all the components that Holy Angels wanted in a sensory space - but the designated area wasn’t large enough for the standard unit. Would the Fun and Function team be able to maximize the allotted space without leaving out any crucial components?

Step 1: Choosing the Sensory Tools
The Fun and Function Sensory Room Design Team analyzed the blueprints for the room and decided to customize
a play system to perfectly suit the space and the clientele.
While the core elements of the play system stayed the same, they reimagined others to suit the Holy Angels
clientele.

Climb, Slide and Cozy Up!
The Rock Wall is a great space where kids build
confidence as they practice balance, increase
body awareness, develop gross motor skills and
more.
The Slide offers vestibular input, and the
Clubhouse beneath the tower is a cozy spot
where kids can regulate.

Swinging for all Ages and Stages
Since the space would be used by kids ranging from ages 2-21, the swings in particular needed to be suitable for both small kids and large adults. The team selected the Bolster Swing and the Organic Cotton Hammock Chair for their versatility and generous weight capacities.

Tools for Calm, Confidence and Coordination
The team also wanted to include a variety of sensory tools that could be used for therapeutic purposes. The Jumping Board and Trampoline with Handrail appeal to sensory seekers who crave sensory input, and they also help kids develop core strength. The Rockin Rocker Board is a sturdy choice for developing balance reactions and motor planning. For those who benefit from calming proprioceptive input and heavy work, the Space Explorers and the Crawl and Calm Resistance Tunnel were included. The team also added multiple Crash Pads and Mats to keep kids safe as they swing, climb and jump.

Students can also enjoy satisfying visual and tactile input from the Fiber Optic Light Strands, or cozy up with Heavy Herbert for hugs and input that’s sure to put a smile on their faces!

These sensory tools create a nurturing environment where kids can relax, explore and unwind in the way that works best for them.
Step 2: Design & Layout
The next step was to decide on the color scheme of the room since a sensory space should never look like a drab therapy clinic! The team decided on bright, bold colors that are inviting to kids of all ages and stages.
Finally, the team discussed layout, deciding where each chosen sensory tool would be placed, making sure to maximize the setup and space.

The End Result
Exactly what we imagined and we wouldn’t change a thing!
- Michelle Howlett, assistant principal of Washington Elementary School
The Holy Angels team was gratified by the smooth experience and the team’s focus on their unique needs. Once the room was installed, their vision came to life! They look forward to seeing kids and young adults thrive in their customized sensory space.
