With all the toys out there on the market, it can be overwhelming to choose the best toys for a child with special needs. Whether you are a parent, grandparent or friend, we’re sharing some of our favorite sensory toy options that a child with autism will enjoy and benefit from.

Deep pressure input has a soothing effect on children. Use it at home or on the go. When your child is going into a new and overwhelming situation, bring the lap pad with you for a calming and therapeutic effect. Your child can explore the smooth texture on one side and the quilted fabric on the other side for additional tactile stimulation.

Ignite your child’s imagination with this inflatable barrel. They can be astronauts in a space capsule or explorers hiding from dinosaurs in a cave! Rolling in the barrel provides alerting input for before homework; rocking back and forth provides calming input. It's also great for a quiet space to read or rest. You can also use this to teach spatial awareness such as in and out, over and under.

Ride on toys are a great way to promote core strength, balance and postural awareness. This scooter’s soft seat and supportive sides are perfect for indoor and outdoor play. The low-to-the-ground style helps little ones with gravitational insecurity get the movement they need and still feel safe. Use it to race against the clock or navigate obstacle courses.

These turtles are perfect for fine motor fun. Practice lining up the snaps and pushing them together to strengthen visual motor skills and finger strength. Each turtle is a different weight and color. Use them as bean bags, to identify colors, for pre-dressing skills, or as a plush weighted fidget. Kids love having these weighted companions.

The Mushy Smushy Bean Bag Chair is a great alternative to hard seating. Place one in a reading corner, your bedroom, or in a playroom for use during floor activities. The stuffing hugs your body, providing deep pressure input to calm an overworked nervous system. It’s lightweight, portable and available in 3 different sizes, so you’re sure to find the right fit for you.
